Debate has finally begun in the Wisconsin Assembly on a bill that would take away collective bargaining rights from public workers -- with Republican Speaker Jeff Fitagerald reading from a death threat he says he received.
Democrats then introduced a resolution to remove Fitzgerald as speaker, saying he didn't uphold the state's open meeting law with quick action taken Wednesday to allow the bill to pass in the Senate.
The sponsor, Democratic Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca, said Fitzgerald's "judgment is impaired" and that "democracy is out of control in Wisconsin."
The resolution failed, 57-37, in a vote taken around 2 p.m.
Republican Rep. Scott Suder, the Assembly's majority leader, said the Assembly would vote on the union measure at 3:30 p.m.
